Chapter 4

They arrived on a beach in Norrvegr three days later. The stretch of sand was a lonely one. No one would know they had landed there.

The Norsemen who had taken Alvina to England and back were paid well for their trouble. They left the two women on the beach with a few supplies before returning to the sea.

“Are they trustworthy?” Fern asked.

“They are not from Norrvegr, so they are quite trustworthy,” Alvina replied. “Come, our destination is not far, but it would be better to get there before dark.”

Fern hefted the pack onto her back. She reached for Alvina’s.

“I can carry it,” Alvina said.

“I do not mind,” Fern replied. “I carried many things until the Thane found a new purpose for me.”

“That may be so, but as it is, you are not my slave and I shall not treat you as such.” She pulled the pack onto her back and began to lead the girl off the beach toward the snow covered woods beyond.

A house with a straw-thatched roof stood alone in the clearing, a curl of smoke rising from its chimney. Alvina stopped and dropped her pack onto the ground. She rubbed one sore shoulder with her hand and sighed.

“He is not going to be pleased to see me,” she said.

Fern studied the dwelling. It was not well kept. The roof needed re-thatching, the foliage surrounding it was overgrown, and holes riddled the walls. The place exuded a strange sadness in its dilapidated state, for Fern could envision what it once had been.

“He built it for his wife,” Alvina said.

The hush of winter seemed to grow heavier at these words. Fern felt that she should not break that silence, but her curiosity was great.

“Is it true she was unfaithful to him and he killed her?”

“No, he did not kill her. The explanation is a complicated one and it would be better if you heard it from his own lips.”

“You said you had something which would aid me in the task. What is it?”

Alvina smiled. “Just a little love potion wrapped in a love spell. He may be able to resist some of its effect, but not all. This will increase the odds in your favor.” She leaned down to take up her pack. “Let us go. He knows we are here and I believe he is already in a foul mood.”

“Did the bones tell you that?”

“No, he is always that way.”

Alvina was nearly to the door when it flew open and a great, bearded man stepped out. His bare chest steamed in the cold, and he glared at them with eyes the color of blood. A white-blonde mane framed his brutal face.

“What do you here, Alvina?” he asked in a low voice.

“I know you have no wish to see me, Brant—“

“You would be correct.”

“But, I have come to ask a boon of you and, in return, I would give you a gift.”

Brant’s eyes shifted over to Fern. He stared at her for several seconds before turning away.

“Get out.”

“Will you not hear what I have to say?”

“I have no interest in your boons nor your gifts.
